Despite
the cost, sometimes you just have to go for it,
especially when you're organizing a sixtieth
birthday. And yes, Hotel Angelica delivers; from
its unique rooms to the wrought iron balcony to
the creative room names like, Safo, Ivi, and
Amonia. The 'Armonia' balcony hangs
independently over a cobblestone street that
stretches from the harbour to the top of the
town. Notwithstanding two garbage trucks,
vehicles are not allowed on Hydra (or Idra as
locals call it) so there is little street
noise, only the click-clock of donkey
hooves climbing upwards in the heat. And
then back down for another load. Maybe
you'll pick up a Greek word or two as locals
stop to chat. But most of all you will admire
the panorama of an old Hydra and its ubiquitous
flowers and maybe come to a complete halt -
exhale - let go of the past and breath in the
inspiring present. You will talk about staying.
Once
rested, you will probably go looking for
Leonard Cohen's house, drink a beer at a local
taverna or with any luck taste the best squid in
the world. Regardless of what you
do, returning to Hotel Angelica will be a
joy.
Please
note that the harbour cannot be seen from the
balcony.
