When you tell
Athenians you're heading for Vasta and they
roll their eyes, just smile, for you
have the secret. And don't let the hair-pin
turns and the two thousand foot drops
intimidate you, believe me it's worth it, for
Vasta is the essential mountain
experience and Fteroto Podilato its
crown. And its manager, Isidora, its crown
jewel. When it comes to looking down on the
clouds (yes, looking down) and inhaling fresh
air it's hard to beat Fteroto Podilato (The
flying bicycle). From your balcony you can
gaze over the magnificent mountain vistas and
spot little villages poking up through the
forests. To add to the charm, a grazing horse
and a shepherd tending his flock are in clear
view. Further down the valley you can see the
12th century basilica of St. Theodora, one of
Greece's living miracles. Many make a
pilgrimage there and so should you (no matter
what your beliefs). And if you are lucky,
Isidora may pick you up in her crippled car
and drive you back up the mountain - to her
little piece of heaven. Fteroto Podilato may
be the best part of your Greek experience. It
was ours. Efcharistó Isidora..
The
walkway to your balcony is the same as your
neighbours, so, be discreet with your
hot tub antics.
